Big Steps

They're just a whole lot of little steps really . . .

I'd be shivering more if my roommate's cat weren't on my lap. Ope, there she goes. I'm apparently no match for the heater vent on the floor. (Sorry, Fuzzy). I tend to shiver when I'm cold and when I'm discussing subjects that really matter to me. Right now, I think it's because of both.

There have been several big steps made in the last few days. Ben Folds rescheduled his Norman, Oklahoma show for February. I had my first swing dancing experience. My dad decided to retire early from the friendly skies, a job he dearly loves. My roommate Amy's internet boyfriend has come for the first visit. I put in my application for a teaching position in Germany. Kevin and Latonya walked down the aisle to Modest Mouse. I had lunch with him today.

Big steps make me shiver. They come with hope and silver linings. They come with expectations and disappointment. They have yet to be the arrival that I make them. But they can still be good. "09ua akljsj (sorry, the kitten thinks the tuna sandwich smell is coming from the keyboard.) Big steps come with change in all its unfettered, smelly (and in the case of swing dancing, sweaty) glory.

Here's to big steps! May they always be preceded by tiny faithful ones! Prost! (i'm going to put on another sweater.)

you said goodbye, cade. and i got a pretty darn good hug out of the deal, too. i'm glad we hung out with kevin's dad. that was a great night. i'm not sure i know what the hell i'm talking about in this blog. feelings about this weekend and my family and lunch today are just way too much to be concise about in a single post. so i generalized instead so i could get to my student's house on time this evening. it was good to see you.

Remember that scene in WHAT ABOUT BOB? where he's in Dr. Leo Marvin's office? And Dr. Leo tells him about a "ground-breaking new book" entitled "Baby Steps"? The Bob Wiley walks around the room, out the door, and yes, even onto the elevator chanting his new mantra--"baby steps around the room, baby steps out the door, baby steps onto the elevator..." I love that. If baby steps worked there, I don't see how it couldn't work here.

i like that he has a fish named 'gil.'

I'd always thought he would spell it "Gill," not "Gil." With a comma, See? But you're probably right. Alls I know is the son-of-a-gun wears his goldfish around his neck while riding the bus to Lake Winnapasoke (sp?)

how'd the lunch go? was it good? productive? nauseating?

it was nice. civil and nice. my physical reaction was to not be able to finish my tuna sandwich, but my emotional reaction was one in the direction of healing.

cade, my last comment made me think of that song i wrote for you in arkadoo. do you remember the subway song?

"is subway ok?
i asked out of hunger.
yeah, you say,
cause you've seen a pretty girl that works there.
and suddenly,
my tuna on wheat doesn't sound so good..."

Reminds me of a Quarterflash song:
"Take me to heart
Don't believe the miracle
Take me to heart
(something something something)"
Bizarre, no?
